Breath Analysis in Clinical Use
To date only four breath tests have made the transition from research into clinical practice following FDA approval, despite advances in both discovery of biomarkers for various ailments and identifying drug metabolizing enzyme deficiencies.
- Monitoring CO2 (capnography)
- NO breath test to monitor asthma therapy
- Heartsbreath test for heart transplant rejection
- Urea 13C breath test for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection
Regulatory approval of additional breath tests will attract and motivate more young researchers to breath research and their use in clinical practice.
